Chairman’s Notes

Welcome to Gloucester Camera Club for the 2023-2024 season and the club’s 80th year.

Thanks to the efforts of Kevin, our Programme Secretary, we can look forward to another interesting season of meetings with guest presenters, competition evenings, ‘photo critique’ evenings and ‘club nights’.

Guest presentations, competition judging evenings and other club events are held in person at our meetings in the village hall, whenever this is practical. We value the social aspects of the club, meeting friends to discuss our latest projects or perhaps to simply meet other people with a shared interest.

At Gloucester Camera Club, we believe that although meeting ‘on-line’ risks being too impersonal, it can also have certain advantages, such as allowing us to invite guest presenters for whom it would not be practical to visit us in person. In this first half of the season, we will have Warren Alini (sports photography) on 3rd October and Ian Bateman (audio-visual presentations) on 24th October, who will be presenting their talks via Zoom, which will be both live-streamed and shown projected onto the big screen in the meeting hall.

The ‘Photo Critique’ evenings are an opportunity for club members to present images for discussion and comment by a guest photographer or club members. These usually result in a wealth of hints and tips concerning image composition, lighting and photographic techniques.

On ‘Club Nights’, members are invited to talk about about their interest in a specific photographic subject or technique.

We may, additionally, meet for an extra ‘Technical Evening’, where a club member or guest will give a short presentation or practical demonstration.

If anyone would like to volunteer to organize an event, such as a photographic outing or to present a topic on a Technical Evening, please let us know.

If you intend to enter any of our club competitions, please read the rules carefully (see below) and ask if anything is unclear. Any Committee member will be happy to explain. The rules document also contains general information about the various competitions and the workings of the club. To ensure that our club remains inclusive for all levels of members’ experience and budgets, we accept images taken on any kind of photographic device, such as a camera, phone, drone, action or trail cam or home-made device, in fact anything that will produce a pleasing image using electronic sensors or even film. Images may be in colour or black and white (monochrome), according to the rules for the specific competition or event. Where entries in colour are allowed, it is also possible to apply colour or mono to different elements in a single image, if desired.

We welcome all comments, suggestions and ideas for future meetings. Please contact us.
